Tourists visiting India cannot get SIM cards with more than 3 months validity

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has asked the service providers not to provide SIM cards with a validity of more than 3 months to the tourists from other countries visiting India. They have also asked the operators to provide SIM cards only with a passport with a valid Visa, and the validity of these SIM cards should not be beyond the validity of the visa.

This measure is to prevent any misuse of SIM cards issued to the foreign nationals, after they leave the country. The address of the local reference, and the details of the tourist operator should be provided while buying a new SIM card.

The Consumer Application Form (CAF) filled during the purchase of the SIM card should have the person’s sign before activation of the SIM card thereby certifying that the information provided on the form is correct and also the date of sale of SIM card.
